WEAR A MASK

The past 4 years have been difficult years for America because of the corruption, chaos, and incompetence of Trump and the sycophants surrounding him  culminating in the especially tragic COVID pandemic of 2020 exacerbated by politicization and neglect by the White House. But we are now beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel with the election of Joe Biden as president and Kamala Harris as vice president in January who are bringing along a superstar competent cabinet. Also we have seen the beginning of vaccinations. But we are still not out of trouble yet. There is much to be done. The run off election in Georgia in January is extremely important. The election of Ossoff and Warnock to the Senate will facilitate Biden’s job of correcting the damage of the outgoing president and his cronies, if only it will happen. It will take time to get the population vaccinated. There are some who will not trust it. It is known that the vaccine will prevent serious illness in the person vaccinated, but it is still not known whether it will prevent that person from being contagious to others. SO, IT WILL BE STILL EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO WEAR A MASK AND PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING! Have a happy and safe new year. Next year will be an improvement over this one.

SUPREME COURT

Trump thought that by appointing Radical Right Wing judges to the Supreme Court he would pack the court with judges who would be loyal to him and protect him no matter what misdeeds he performed. But Donald was wrong. Those judges turned out to have integrity (more integrity than so many Republicans in the Senate and House of Representatives). They were loyal to America more than to Trump. So Donald was not able to steal the presidency and turn America into a Trumpish autocratic dictatorship. God bless America. The system worked.

GEORGIA SENATOR CANDIDATE DEBATES

I saw the debate between Reverend Warnock and Senator Loeffler on television. The contrast between the two was striking. Reverend Warncock expressed his views and questioned his opponent in a normal and competent manner. Senator Loeffler appeared to be a robot saying the same programmed slogans over and over again. One wonders if she were turned around would we see a battery pack embedded in her back?

I didn’t see the Ossoff debate. I understand that Senator Perdue did not show up. So Jon Ossoff spoke to an empty lectern. Apparently Perdue was too chicken to answer questions about using his public office to further his personal investment misdeeds.

CONSERVATIVE AND PROGRESSIVE ARE COMPATIBLE

The terms Conservative and Progressive are compatible. I am a Democrat in that I vote in the Democratic primaries and usually vote for Democrat nominees in the general elections. I consider myself a conservative Progressive which you might call a moderate Progressive or a moderate Democrat or a Left of Center Democrat. I am happy that Joe Biden was elected president because he aligns most closely with my views. He supports Progressive Ideas where they are really necessary but is willing to listen to Conservative Republicans and compromise where it is necessary to move forward. I believe that Kamala Harris is also a Conservative Progressive although perhaps slightly heavier on the Progressive. I believe Barak Obama is also a conservative Progressive. His opponents and many supporters assumed he was Progressive without the conservative before he was elected President, but if one had looked at his past actions and writings one could see that he was actually a conservative Progressive. I do not consider the extreme Right to be conservative. There is nothing conservative about Donald Trump or Mitch McConnell and his radical right Republicans in the Senate. I hope that Jon Ossoff and Rev. Warnock win in the Georgia senator election in January which will enhance Biden’s ability to clean up the mess that Trump will leave behind when he leaves office. Biden will bring sanity, honesty, competence, and conservative Progress to American government which has already been shown in his choices presented for his Cabinet.

WHY GEORGIANS NEED TO VOTE FOR OSSOFF AND WARNOCK

Hello People of Georgia,

There will be a runoff election for both Senate seats in Georgia this coming January 5.

Important dates to remember are:

• November 18: Earliest day for a registrar to mail an absentee ballot for the general election runoff
• December 7: Voter registration deadline to vote in the federal runoff election
• December 14: Advanced in-person or early voting begins for the general election runoff for federal offices
• January 5, 2021: Federal runoff election day

This election will be crucial because if the 2 democratic candidates win, that will make the number of senators in the US Senate even, 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans. If a vote is tied, the tie will be broken by the Vice President who will be Kamala Harris. What makes this so important is that the Senate under Mitch McConnell has been uncompromising in blocking legislation for the American people passed in the House of Representatives. This happened during the Obama administration and would most likely happen during the Biden administration if McConnell retains control of the Senate. It would allow McConnell to interfere with President Biden’s efforts to curb the COVID epidemic and bring back the economy. McConnell has shown that he is more interested in his political power and the financial interests of his rich oligarch friends including Russian oligarchs tied to the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin than in the well-being of ordinary Americans. President Biden will be faced with the daunting task of cleaning up the mess left behind by Trump and his gang and will need every resource to accomplish this for us Americans. Joe Biden has shown his desire to bring together the American people of all political opinions and work for all of us. But if McConnell and his gang work against the American people that will further polarize America between the dishonest Trumpish Right and the extreme Left. So, people of Georgia, America is depending on you. ELECT JON OSSOFF and REVEREND RAPHAEL WARNOCK TO THE SENATE TO BRING AMERICA TOGETHER, TO DEFEAT COVID, AND TO BRING HONESTY, CIVILITY, AND BALANCE BACK TO THE GOVERNMENT OF AMERICA.

Mazel Tov (Good Luck) to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. We are seeing a new dawn in America after 4 years of darkness, chaos, dishonesty, premeditated division, corruption, and incompetence. The road ahead will not be easy. Biden will have a big task in cleaning up the mess which Trump will leave behind him. Trump is still planning frivolous laws suits to challenge the election. Congratulations have come in from all over the world, but most Republican senators and congressmen have remained silent. Some have voiced agreement with Trump in his false claims of “election fraud.” But Biden has wisely voiced a desire to find common ground with the Republicans to forge ahead with sanity and progress to benefit all Americans. Joe has the wisdom, experience, empathy, and ability to make it happen at least partially. There will be two re-elections for senators in Georgia in January. If the two Democratic candidates can be added to the Senate, that will make progress easier. As a Californian, I can’t vote in the Georgia election, but I have contributed to the campaigns of the Democratic Senate candidates. However those elections turn out, Joe Biden is the person for the job to bring America back to reality, sanity, empathy, and honesty.

During the year 2020, I have devoted this blog with increasing frequency to American politics because the election has been existential for America. Now that the election is mostly behind us, perhaps the frequency will decrease depending on what happens. I will continue to include comments on American politics in this blog because America is my country. I was born here and have lived here all my life. But I will balance it with a return to the original purpose of this blog, to discuss religion, particularly Judaism, and to discuss topics of interest concerning my fellow Jews all over the world, the 40% who live here in America, the 40% who live in Israel, and the 20% who live everywhere else.

THE ELECTION WILL CULMINATE TOMORROW

America, we have suffered through 4 years of the Trump presidency including Trump’s lies, chaos, kleptocracy, inequity, incompetence, and voter suppression. Trump has used his office to line his pockets with your money. Trump lacks empathy. His decisions are based on whatever will benefit himself personally, not what is good for our country. He has divided America turning us against each other instead of uniting us because in his twisted mind he believes that will benefit him. He has magnified the worst in us and suppressed our best ideals. His foreign policy has bordered on treasonous by following the lead of Vladimir Putin against our fellow democracies and inviting Putin’s neo-KGB to invade America’s political processes through cyber space. Trump has allowed the COVID epidemic to take over America, killing more than 200,000 of us, because of mismanagement fueled by his fear that openly admitting to the pandemic's existence and dealing with it would somehow hurt him politically. During 4 years, Trump has not learned to be a real American president because he does not listen. Presidents usually do not enter the job with past presidential experience, but they learn on the job by listening to competent advice, digesting that advice, and turning it into the best action that they can do to benefit America. Instead, Trump has fired competent advisers when they dared to disagree with any preconceived ideas that pop into Trump's head replacing them with incompetent sycophants who rubber stamp his nonsense.

In stark contrast, we have the opportunity to elect Joe Biden. Joe has 8 years experience as vice president in a very competent administration (which is as close to being president as one gets before actually being president). He has those qualities that we need in a president: honesty, competence, empathy, experience, belief in democracy, and service to America over to oneself. Joe will be a great president if you will take the time to VOTE. VOTE FOR JOE BIDEN.

Another 4 years of Trump will unleash the worst in his bad behavior and drag America down to autocracy. VOTE! VOTE TRUMP OUT OF OFFICE! VOTE FOR JOE BIDEN WHO WILL BE A REAL AMERICAN PRESIDENT TO BRING HONESTY AND COMPETENCE BACK TO OUR GOVERNMENT AND LEAD US OUT OF THE COVID CRISIS!

TRUMP IS GETTING NERVOUS

The last day of the 2020 election is the day after tomorrow, and Trump is getting nervous. He is trying every dirty trick in his bag. He crippled the US Postal Service to keep Americans from sending mail-in ballots. A fleet of his goons surrounded and attacked a Biden Campaign bus in Texas. His phony COVID adviser Dr. Atlas, who considers us Americans a herd that will magically develop herd immunity if we just let the virus kill off the weakest among us, went on RT (Russian propaganda television) to tell us to not protect ourselves from the virus. So in 2 days, God willing, enough Americans will vote for Joe Biden to overcome all the obstacles placed in front of us by Trump, his enablers, his boss Putin, and Putin’s neo-KGB to usher in a new age of normalcy, competence, and honesty to clean up the mess left by Trump and his gang and to bring Trump’s virus epidemic under control.

Donald Trump: You are such an idiot (and a sociopath)! You tried to sweep the COVID pandemic under the rug because you thought it would hurt you politically. If you would have shown some empathy for us American people (even if you would have faked the empathy part), you would have done what American presidents have done in the past (like Lincoln with the Confederacy Rebellion, FDR in World War II, the older George Bush when Iraq invaded Kuwait, the Younger George Bush at 9-11 although he could have eliminated the side war in Iraq, and Barak Obama with the Ebola epidemic) by being honest and stepping up to the plate. But instead you chose the chicken option by pretending the pandemic is no big deal. Well, your stupidity, laziness, and lack of courage has backfired on you. It has exposed what a fake you are. Your loyal zombies who will follow you into any abyss unbelievably make up a shrinking 1/3 of our population. But the election will be won by the 2/3 of us who have come to see you as you are and who will overcome your voter suppression, dismantling of the US Postal Service, gerrymandering, neo-KGB hacking, and other misdeeds to win the election. Donald, you exposed yourself. America has been hit harder by COVID then any other country in the developed world because of your mismanagement. It is time for you to step aside when we get Joe Biden as a real president. Remember Donald, COVID! COVID! COVID! will remain in your nightmares.

The USA has existed and grown as a democratic republic for more than 200 years. I believe that the Trump test is in the same league as the test posed by the Confederacy during their rebellion that we call the Civil War. The election has begun. Millions of votes have been already cast. The voting will culminate in a few days, and it will likely take some days after that to get the results. The Trump Party has put their thumbs on the scale as we have never seen before including the use of cyber attacks by Putin’s neo-KGB, crippling the US Postal Service to stop mail-in votes, placing obstacles to make voting difficult for voters, and even sending armed goons to voting places to intimidate voters. We need every patriotic American to vote. As Johnny Apple Seed was supposed to have gone around spreading apple tree seeds, Trump is going around maskless encouraging his followers to avoid masks and social distancing exposing their noses, mouths, and lungs to COVID19 virus particles. In Trump's mind promoting his political goals takes precedence over the health of his faithful. Other accomplishments of Trump include using his presidency to line his personal pockets, defending his buddy Putin, and opposing America’s allies. Trump lies incessantly. He just makes up stuff that suit him politically. The list goes on and on, but the details are too numerous to tell them all here.

Trump now says that he would fire Gina Haspel, the CIA director, and Christopher Wray, the FBI director, if Trump gets elected for another term. Why? These are patriotic experts who rose up in those organizations. Who would replace them? I strongly suspect Trump would replace them with political hacks slavishly loyal to Trump and his mentor Vladimir Putin, essentially removing some of the last defenders of American democracy. This could complete the plot of Putin and his neo-KGB to undermine our country.

Beware of armed goons near polling booths who are there to intimidate American voters to vote for Trump. So, Americans, VOTE! Vote as early as possible. BIDEN'S PLANS TO CONTROL COVID

 Joe Biden gives us practical realistic honest details of what he will do to control the COVID epidemic in the USA if he will be elected president and especially if he will have a practical realistic honest Senate to work with him. Donald Trump only tells us lies and slogans but no real plan.

SENATOR PERDOODOO

Dear Senator Perdoodoo (alias David Perdue of Georgia).

Ordinarily I would not address a US senator with a nickname, but since you have mocked the name of your fellow Senator Kamala Harris publicly on television, you certainly should not object to me making fun of your name. I apologize to anyone else in your family who shares the Perdue name, but as for you the doodoo part of your nickname aptly fits your words.

IS JUDGE AMY CONEY BARRETT A VEGETARIAN?

Is Judge Amy Coney Barrett a vegetarian? I googled that question and found no answer. My guess is that the no answer on google suggests that she is not a vegetarian although I could be wrong. My reason for posing the question is that Judge Barrett considers abortion morally wrong in that anti-abortionists consider the human fetus an independent human being. Pro-abortionists think of the human fetus as a part of the mother and therefore it is up to the mother to decide. Abortion is legal in the USA. The question of when in the pregnancy should abortion be legal varies from state to state and in the opinions of various people. It is also dependent on the health of the mother and the health of the fetus. Many of us feel that if the pregnancy is threatening the life of the mother, the mother’s life should take precedence at any stage. Also if it is obvious that the fetus has a developmental condition that would lead to a severely poor quality of life for the child, that would be reason for abortion.

Now why do I ask the question about vegetarianism? I, myself, am not a vegetarian. I limit my meat consumption, especially mammals, not so much out of pity for those animals, but more for health purposes and because nowadays plant based tasty imitation meat is readily available. However if one were to compare the consciousness of an adult cow or even a calf to a first trimester human fetus, the cow or calf is more conscious, more emotional, and therefore one might say has more of a soul.

BALANCING THE COURT

The Republicans have recently accused the Democrats of daring to consider “packing” the Supreme Court if the Republican Senate and President push through Radical Right Judge Amy Comey Barrett to replace Liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the last moments before the lame duck Republican President and Senate leave office (assuming the upcoming election brings in Joe Biden as President and a majority of Democrats in the Senate). The fact is that the Republican Senate hypocritically blocked President Obama from replacing Justice Scalia with Judge Merrick Garland about one year before the end of Obama’s presidency and is now pushing through Judge Barrett in the last days of Trump’s presidency and the present Senate using the exact opposite logic in each case because one logic suited them then and the opposite now. It is pure politics without regard to the will of the American people. Now the Republicans complain that Biden and Harris will not answer whether they will pack the Court if elected. But actually there is no reason why Biden or Harris should answer that hypothetical question which is phrased in terminology to make them look bad before the election. Actually the Republicans have packed the Supreme Court and want to continue packing it now because the polls favor the Democrats in the upcoming election. If the Republican packing succeeds, the Supreme Court will have 6 judges on the Right and only 3 on the Left. The remedy to this unbalanced Court would be for the Democrats to change the size of the Supreme Court by adding 3 more judges and appoint liberal judges to take those positions after the Democrats take office, thus making it 6 tending one way and 6 tending the other way. There is nothing in the Constitution that sets the number of Supreme Court justices, and historically it has been changed in the past.

RIGHT WING TERRORIST GROUP CAUGHT PLOTTING TO KIDNAP GOVERNOR OF MICHIGAN

A violent radical Right-Wing terrorist group called the Wolverine Watchmen was discovered and arrested by Michigan authorities and the FBI for plotting to kidnap Gretchen Whitmer, the Governor of Michigan. That group likes to swagger around sporting assault rifles. They claim that their reason for targeting Governor Whitmer is her executive order mandating the wearing of masks to help curb the spread of the COVID19 virus. President Trump has opposed mandating mask wearing and social distancing because he wants to downplay the threat of COVID19. He wanted to downplay the threat early in the epidemic because he considered that downplay to benefit him politically. The Wolverine Watchmen are one of the racist Radical Right groups that President Trump favors. They consider mandating masks to be an infringement on their rights. I wonder if they consider mandating automobile insurance also as an infringement on their rights. Apparently they and Trump forget that spreading the COVID virus is an infringement on the rights of others around them. Trump was informed early in the arrival of the pandemic in the USA of the danger of the virus, but he chose to hide that danger from the American people (we have it on tape recorded by Bob Woodward). Apparently he thought it would benefit him politically to do so.

PRESIDENT TRUMP, WELCOME TO THE HERD

 Dr. Scott Atlas (a radiologist and not an infectious disease expert or epidemiologist) is now Trump’s advisor who advocates herd immunity. Herd immunity is the concept that if you just allow an epidemic to progress unchecked, the herd (community) will develop enough immune survivors to control the epidemic. So now President Trump (who does not do mask wearing and social distancing and who has discouraged others from practicing those measures) has himself become infected with COVID19 and has been hospitalized for that disease. Welcome Mr. President to the herd.

THE CENTRALITY OF DEMOCRACY, CAPITALISM, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE IN AMERICA

America is the land of opportunity. It is that opportunity that has attracted immigrants from all over the world for many years. But that American opportunity has been incomplete when unfettered to the point of allowing social and economic injustice. That injustice was seen in the sweat shops of a century ago and taken to the extreme in the slavery that existed in the South before the Civil War. The after effects of that slavery persisted after the Civil War and have been slow to end. Although diminished, they persist in varying degrees to the present. Economically many of the wealthiest Americans desperately want to maximize their wealth as much as possible in relation to their fellow Americans and are willing to take any measures including the suppression of democracy to retain that maximization. Inequities are not just economic. Some Americans desperately feel the need to retain the social position given to them because of their race, religion, or country of origin of their ancestors and are willing to suppress the rights of their neighbors to retain that social position.

In the upcoming election, President Trump has been enabled to lie and cheat because he represents a shrinking radical right minority who wish to retain out of control economic and social advantages. Joe Biden in the primary election defeated and then reached agreement with the farther left faction of his party who tried to get ahead of the reality of this point in time. Biden represents the realistic centrism that can pull America together today. VOTE FOR JOE BIDEN FOR PRESIDENT AND KAMALA HARRIS FOR VICE PRESIDENT! Most important, VOTE! VOTE EARLY! VOTE IN WHICHEVER WAY WORKS BEST FOR YOU! MAKE SURE YOUR VOTE IS RECEIVED AND COUNTED! IF WE STICK TOGETHER IN THIS CRUCIAL ELECTION, WE CAN DUKE OUT OUR DIFFERENT IDEAS IN THE NEXT ELECTION.

REALITY TRUMPS TRUMP’S FICTIONAL REALITY SHOW

It is now reported that President Trump, Melania Trump, and Hope Hicks have tested positive for COVID19. What did they expect when they pack together without masks like sardines to make his rallies look big? Trump’s false narrative that face masks and social distancing are not necessary has come back to bite him. How many other people who attended the rallies have contracted the virus? We know that one of his ardent supporters, Herman Cain, died of coronavirus after attending one of Trump’s rallies.

PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

The first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden occurred yesterday evening. In my opinion, Biden was the obvious winner and Trump was the loser. Trump from the onset had a melt-down, loudly spewing lies and nonsense and constantly interrupting both Biden and the moderator, Chris Wallace of Fox News. Trump showed himself to be a loud-mouth, fowl mouth, unhinged bully. Biden presented himself as presidential, honest, and competent. Biden’s best moments were when he ignored Trump, looked directly at the camera, and spoke to the American people. Trump’s actions were most likely the way he ordinarily is but amplified by fear that he is so behind in the polls that his artificial advantages due to the Electoral College and using his presidential levers of power to suppress voting (for example damaging the United States Postal Service to suppress mail-in voting) might be overcome by reality. Trump’s fear is most likely heightened by the knowledge that his personal financial crimes committed both before and during his presidency are coming to light and he will lose the ability to protect himself by using the powers of the presidency.

QUESTIONS FOR TRUMP

President Trump, I have a few questions for you.

1.    What are you hiding in the tax returns that you refuse to make public? I know you say you can’t release them because you are under audit. But that is a lie. Being under audit does not prevent a person from releasing tax returns. And, by the way, why are you under audit? Does it have something to do with the fact that you claim to have successfully made so much money in business before you became president and would use that business ability to improve the American economy? But actually it is now known that you paid very low amounts in taxes, lower than most average Americans, lower than many undocumented immigrants whom you deride? Donald, you can’t have it both ways, high income to the banks when you want to borrow money and low income to the US Treasury when you are called to pay your fair share of taxes. When you don’t pay your fair share of taxes, the rest of us Americans have to pay more (in taxes or loss in services) to make up the difference.

2.    Why are you so subservient to Vladimir Putin? Why do you prefer information from Putin’s neo-KGB over the American intelligence agencies? Why did the neo-KGB hack American computers and use social media to influence the 2016 election in your favor and are doing it again in the upcoming 2020 election.? Do you owe Putin something? Did he give or lend you money? Does that not indicate that you might show him and his country preferential treatment to the detriment of the interests of America?

3.    Why do you prefer foreign dictatorships (like Russia and Turkey) over our democratic allies in Western Europe? Do you have or seek financial interests in those dictatorships? Do they give you money? Or is it just that you aspire to transforming America into a dictatorship under you?

4.    Why did you sweep the seriousness of the COVID pandemic under the rug early in the pandemic? We know you knew about it because Bob Woodward recorded your admission when he interviewed you. At the same time you were telling the American people it was not serious. We know that is true because we heard you say that on television. Hiding the seriousness of the pandemic resulted in many more deaths in the USA than in other developed countries. That showed a lack of empathy for the American people, but wasn’t that also stupid?

5.    There are many more questions that could be asked about your shady, treasonous, and bigoted actions, but the list could go on and on. So for the moment let’s stop here.

DISLOYAL

I recommend Michael Cohen’s book, DISLOYAL. Mr. Cohen was a loyal lawyer and fixer for Donald Trump before he became president, during his 2016 presidential campaign, and during the early years of Trump’s presidency. The FBI seized materials from Cohen’s office and hotel room in April 2018 which documented his guilt in tasks done in the service of Trump. When it became obvious that Cohen would be indicted for those illegal tasks, Trump dumped Cohen and distanced himself from Cohen, leaving Cohen to take the consequences for the crimes which Trump directed Cohen to commit. Then Cohen turned against Trump, admitted his own guilt as well as those of Trump. Why did he turn against Trump? One obvious factor was that Trump did not return the loyalty that Cohen had shown to Trump. Another important factor was that his wife and children had all along disagreed with Cohen’s service to Trump and Trump’s corruption. Cohen admits his own guilt and agrees that his punishment was deserved. Perhaps Cohen had an epiphany as part of his reason. So what caused Cohen to do the crimes he did in the service of Trump? I can’t know independently what was in Cohen’s head. I can only read what Cohen said in his book. In the book, Cohen goes into detail about how he became enamored with glitter and power. In that way the book not only exposes Trump’s selfishness, narcissism, lack of empathy, and lack of morality. It also explores Cohen’s own complicity and how a person can be drawn into immorality by the glitter of power.

BETWEEN ROSH HASHONAH AND YOM KIPPUR

We are now in the time period between Rosh Hashonah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). It is said (figuratively) that one’s fate for the year is written on Rosh Hashonah and sealed on Yom Kippur. This year is particularly significant for our country, and since we are Americans, for each of us personally. More than 200,000 Americans have died from COVID giving our country the highest death toll in the world. I wish I would not have to insert politics into religion, but this year I pray that in the upcoming election Joe Biden will be elected to bring sanity and honesty back to the USA. I also pray that we elect senators with integrity who will support the important measures that Biden will have to implement to bring back honesty and civility to America and end the chaos of the past 4 years. We also honor the memory of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who will go down in history as one of the great judges of the Supreme Court. I wish a healthy and good year for all people of all religions and races here in America (citizens and residents) and people all over the world.

NON-DISCRIMINATION LAWS PROTECT PERSONAL FREEDOM

 

My father completed dental school in the 1920s. My parents married in 1929, the year the Great Depression began. The 1930s were difficult years to build a dental practice. In addition to the Depression, there was antisemitism and an oversupply of dentists in the neighborhood where his practice was located. Then World War II began. My father was by then past the draft age. He heard that there was a need for dentists in the suburbs. He started an office at the almost southernmost point in Chicago about half a block from the corner where Chicago and 2 suburbs, Riverdale and Dolton came together. The Riverdale-Dolton community was a steel mill community. The inhabitants at that time were mainly steel mill workers and people who serviced steel mill workers. The inhabitants were also White. After the war a suburb called Altgeld Gardens was developed nearby. Most of the inhabitants of Altgeld Gardens were Black. There was a significant anti-Black sentiment in Riverdale-Dolton. The Whites there feared the Blacks would move into their community. Because of the anti-Black sentiment, my father would lose most of his patients if he took Black patients. On rare occasions when a Black patient came to his office with an emergency (like a bad toothache), he would tell the patient to come to the back door at night and he would usher them in with no one looking. My father had to risk losing a profitable practice in order to do the right thing. If the law would have forced professionals to provide service to all Americans without prejudice, he would not have had to risk his income including the ability to send my brother and me through medical school to provide the ethical service for which he worked so hard.

WHAT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY SHOULD BE

I used to consider myself an Independent who leaned more to the Democratic Party. Actually, the first party in which I ever registered was the Republican Party when I lived in Illinois because I wanted to vote for the nomination of a Republican candidate named Anderson. When I arrive in the voting booth the candidates were not listed, only the names of the electors. I had to step out of the voting booth and ask the judges which elector represented Anderson. My only reply was from a Democratic judge who took me far away from the voting booths to inform me which elector was for Anderson. Apparently, Thompson, the head of the Republican party in Illinois, favored Ronald Reagan. The faithful were informed which elector to vote for. Us Andersonites were not.

I understand the argument of ethical conservative Republicans that our country attracts immigrants because of its equal opportunities for advancement without guarantees. The Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln in the 1860s was the party that ended slavery. As a Democrat, I also believe that a wealthy country like ours should provide a safety net for those less fortunate. I also have noted that opportunity in America is not always equal or self-made. Wealth is often obtained by inheritance or sheer luck. Opportunities are often given prejudicially based on one’s religion, race, ancestry, or country of origin. I am not a socialist. I understand that everything can not be exactly the same for everyone. But there should be a reasonable limit to inequality.

In recent years, the Republican Party has increasingly become the party of billionaires to the detriment of the rest of us. They have used various undemocratic means to protect their wealth at times even undermining free honest capitalism by artificially protecting their financial positions. This has finally reached a crescendo with the election of Donald Trump to the presidency and the subsequent perversion of the Republican Party to give in to Trump’s every whim and chaotic behavior, to tolerate his attacks on the institutions of our government, to support his bigotry and divisiveness, and to even look the other way when he colludes with Vladimir Putin, a foreign dictator, against America. These sycophants are willing to discard 250 years of American progress to protect their personal wealth. We Americans must stand up to Trump and his mentor Putin. Many true conservative ethical Republicans have joined us. Just look at all the refugees from the real Republican Party who have sought refuge as commentators on MSNBC.

QUESTIONS FOR TRUMP AND THE TRUMP PARTY HYPOCRITES

 

The Trumpers are clamoring for Joe Biden to release his list of candidates for RBG’s replacement on the Supreme Court, claiming that Trump is being transparent by releasing his list. But that is not true. Trump is releasing his list for purely political reasons to appeal to those in his base who want to destroy the gains made by Justice Ginsburg. Joe Biden will not release his list because that would also be political and would unfairly influence the candidates on his list. Biden should not be drawn in by this trick of the Trump Party. But while we are talking about transparency, Donald, why have we still not seen your tax returns? What are you hiding? Might you be hiding your entanglements with Russian oligarchs (also known as mobsters) and Vladimir Putin? Or your questionable business tactics both before and during your presidency?

Also while we are on the subject of RBC’s replacement, why are you Trump Party senators so willing to jam in a replacement at the last minute before the new president and senate take office contrary what you said concerning the appointment of Merrick Garland in 2016? You guys said then that a Supreme Court justice proposed in the last year of a presidency should be decided by the new president to give the American people the choice. Now you are saying the exact opposite. Is that not hypocritical? Does that not demonstrate to the voters how dishonest you are? Does that not tarnish your reputation? Your place in history?

COVID 19

 

Let’s review the COVID pandemic of this past year and how we got here. COVID 19 began in Wuhan China. At first the Chinese government tried to sweep it under the rug, but soon realized that was an error and mounted a vigorus campaign to control the problem. By then the virus had begun to spread outside of China, particularly to Europe. Then from Europe it began to spread to the USA. Early this year (2020) in a recorded interview with Bob Woodward, Trump admitted that he knew the virus was more contagious and more deadly than previously realized. At the same time Trump continued to downplay the importance of the virus to the American people publicly (and particularly targeting his loyal base) saying that it was just a regular flu and would spontaneously resolve soon. He apparently thought that alerting the public to the seriousness of the problem would be bad for him politically. At that time (and still today) the only effective measures to contain the problem were face mask wearing, social distancing, and cleanliness, but Trump discouraged those measures. To Trump’s followers, protecting themselves and their fellow Americans from the virus became politically incorrect. Trump tried as much as possible to remove scientists with integrity from high office and replaced them with sycophants who say what Trump wants to hear. The person who now has Trump’s ear is Dr. Scott Atlas, a radiologist (not an infectious disease expert or epidemiologist). Contrary to the real experts on the subject, Dr. Atlas favors herd immunity. Herd immunity means let the epidemic proceed  on its own without interference from us humans so it can kill off the most vulnerable (like us old people and also young people with other complicating diseases) and the rest can get sick and develop antibodies. However that means killing off a larger number of Americans (so far more than 200,000), and we don’t yet know with certainty to what extent the antibodies protect us from this particular virus. As a result of Trump’s reckless policy (or lack of policy), the USA has become the worst infected of all the developed countries in the world, and the pandemic has been disastrous for the American economy.

RUTH BADER GINSBURG

 

America mourns the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ginsburg was truly an American heroine and patriot who represented the rights of the American people against the bigots and greedy oligarchs who sought to trample on the rights of Americans. Justice Ginsburg labored on in her work despite illness and advanced age because she knew that if she stopped during the presidency of Trump/Putin and the tenure of the Trumpish McConnell Senate, she would be replaced by a Trumpish Far Right political hack thus further upsetting the balance of the Supreme Court. She almost made it, and in normal times would have reached her goal, but these are not normal times. We now have a corrupt, dishonest, inept administration in the White House led by President Trump who is compromised by Vladimir Putin and Putin’s neo-KGB, and we have a hypocritical leader of the Senate (Moscow Mitch McConnell) who blocked the appointment of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court by President Obama, then jammed through the appointment of Judge Kavanaugh (of questionable personal ethics), and now wants to at the last minute jam through the appointment of any political hack of Trump/Putin’s choosing. We Americans must fight to prevent any appointment to the Supreme Court before hopefully Joe Biden becomes president.

FRAGILITY OF DEMOCRACY

 Democracy is fragile. It’s freedom allows opportunity for opportunists who seek to pervert it.

The first democracy in ancient Greece was ultimately conquered by Alexander the Great who turned it into a monarchy. The same happened to the ancient Roman republic when it was turned into a monarchy by Julius Caesar. France’s brief turbulent unsuccessful first flirtation with democracy was ended by Napoleon who crowned himself emperor. Germany’s democratic Weimar Republic after World War I lasted about 10+ years until Hitler took over and changed it into the most brutal dictatorship in history. Around the same time, Mussolini turned Italy into a fascist dictatorship. Since the end of World War II, most of Western Europe has formed democracies which have stuck so far.

The most long lasting democracy in recent centuries has been ours in the USA. It has not always been perfect. In the beginning it allowed slavery for a period of around 90 years, and we are still working on the after effects of that slavery. But our democracy has lasted and gradually improved in quality over a period of about 245 years. The original framers of our system of government took great pains to create a system of checks and balances because they feared that a tyrant might someday try to overthrow our democracy.

Now we are facing a challenge. A wannabe dictator (Trump) was elected president 4 years ago by less than the majority of Americans through the inequity of the electoral college and the help of a foreign dictator (Putin) who has used his neo-KGB (his spies) to influence our elections through social media in Trump’s favor. Trump has seized the levers of government to consolidate his power by removing people of integrity from high administrative offices in the government and replaced them with sycophants who do not represent the interests of the American people and who hide facts to benefit Trump (and Putin). Trump’s grab at tyranny has been supported by most Republican senators who fear losing their elected seats if they cross him because many true conservatives have left the Republican party leaving behind Trump’s loyal Radical Right.

To my Conservative Republican friends, in this election put country above party. Once we have removed the tyrant from the White House, next time we can duke it out with a new and improved Republican Party. The upcoming election is the greatest test American Democracy has faced. It is existential for America.

Donald Trump: How dare you call American soldiers killed in battle "losers" and "suckers?" How dare you demean John McCain who was captured as a pilot in Vietnam and spent years as a POW in a prison? How dare you insult American war dead. Unlike you, they were patriots who sacrificed for America. 

I did not claim fake "bone spurs" as you did to dodge the draft. I am no hero, but when I was called by the draft to serve my country in 1964, I did so because I am an American. I spent my tour of duty as an army doctor, 1 year in South Korea and the second year in the USA. I was fortunate to not have been in Vietnam, but if I had been sent there I would have gone because that was what one does. 

Also why did you ignore Vladimir Putin's bounties on the heads of American soldiers in Afghanistan? Why are you so subservient to Putin? Why did you ignore reports by American intelligence about attacks on the US elections by Putin's neo-KGB? Is it because those attacks were done to favor your candidacy? Is that why you are acting like Putin's agent, or are you also in debt to him? Donald, what are you hiding from the American people?

BLACK LIVES MATTER REQUIRES GUN CONTROL

Black lives matter as all lives matter. The killings of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, as well as many others were equally tragic and equally unjust. Ahmaud Arbery was hunted down and murdered by two armed White Supremacists who pursued him and shot him while he was jogging because he was Black. This was obvious first degree murder. George Floyd was murdered by a policeman who unnecessarily and illegally choked him to death by placing his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck. One might argue what degree of murder, but it was murder. 

Breonna Taylor's killing was certainly tragic, wrong, and unjust, but who was guilty of what? In that case the police erroneously broke down the door of her apartment (it was the wrong apartment and the culprit they were pursuing was already in police custody) without announcing themselves thus waking up Miss Taylor and her boyfriend. The boyfriend who was in legal possession of a gun fired at the door thinking it was intruders prompting the police to fire back killing Miss Taylor. The police certainly acted with gross incompetence and malpractice, should have been fired, should have lost their licenses to carry guns forever, and should have been liable financially. But where is the greatest guilt? The greatest guilt is in the gun anarchy that exists in America, in the NRA, in the notion that the Second Amendment (which is of doubtful interpretation) allows anyone to carry any kind of firearm at will, in  the greed of the gun industry that will promote any crazy injustice that will bring them money. Racial bias does exist among some policemen and must be corrected with police reform, but correcting the problem of wrongful disproportionate killing of Black men needs gun control to complete the solution to the problem for the safety of all Americans. 

BOOGALOO

The Boogaloos are pro-Trump racist white supremacist Radical Right terrorists who infiltrate peaceful protesters to break windows, loot, set fires, terrorize, and create chaos. Then Trump says that this is due to permissiveness of Democratic local government and that he is the "law and order president" who will solve the lawlessness created by Trump and his loyal terrorists. He paints the gun toting vigilante who crossed the state line into Wisconsin with an AR gun as defending himself when he murdered Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber who tried to disarm him to protect their fellow unarmed peaceful protesters. Rosenbaum and Huber were American heroes who gave their lives in an attempt to protect their fellow Americans, but Trump does not mention their names because that would not serve Trump's political interests.

Trump creating chaos and then pretending to solve the problem that Trump himself created is reminiscent of what Hitler did in the 1930s in Germany and what Fascist dictators have done throughout history to justify their takover of formerly democratic countries.

MURDERS IN KENOSHA

 It started as an all too familiar story. A policeman in Kenosha, Wisconsin shot an unarmed Black man in the back, crippling him, in front of the man’s children as the man tried to re-enter his car. This resulted in peaceful protests which at night included destruction by opportunists who infiltrated into the protests. But a new element appeared. Armed White Trumpish gun anarchist vigilante goons appeared brandishing long guns to intimidate protesters. The police did nothing to stop the gunmen. Two unarmed protesters who tried to take away the gun from one of the gunmen were shot and killed by the gunman, a third was wounded. The unarmed American heroes who died trying to protect their fellow American protesters were Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber. America, remember their names, Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber. These martyrs were heroes who died trying to protect their fellow Americans. If the police had done their duty and arrested or at least disarmed the gunmen, Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber would be alive today. By not doing their duty, the police were complicit in the murders. Tell me, would you have the protesters showing up armed? That would be wrong. That would be civil war. By encouraging vigilante gunmen, Donald Trump, the NRA, and other gun anarchists are complicit in the murders. And it all plays into the hands of Trump’s mentor on the other side of the world, Vladimir Putin and his neo-KGB. They would love to see America weakened by civil war. That is why they installed Trump into the White House.

TRUMP'S MISMANAGEMENT OF THE PANDEMIC CONTINUES

Trump has greatly mismanaged America's response to the COVID19 pandemic. At present there is no proven vaccine. The best obvious response to the virus now and for the past months has been to avoid contact with the virus by social distancing, wearing masks, and washing hands. But Trump early on tried to sweep the virus under the rug and argued against those measures to avoid contact. He argued that the virus is just like any flu and would magically soon disappear. He apparently thought that acknowledging the problem would hurt him politically. As a result a large part of the American population followed his false advice. As a result while the other developed countries worked their ways through the crisis and emerged on the other side with reasonable control of the pandemic and the ability to restart their economies, America still has the highest infection rate, the most deaths, and is still in the resulting economic recession. Trump has walked away from the battle, leaving it to the governors of the fifty states without the backup or coordination of the federal government. Now he wants to unleash an unproven vaccine on the American people without adequate testing on volunteers. It will lead to a wishy washy situation where Americans will be given a vaccine that has not been adequately tested. It will actually prolong the time to know if it is actually working. Also without testing, we will not know what side effects might exist. But Trump thinks it will help him politically. I myself am not willing to be a guinea pig for Trump.

WHERE ARE WE AMERICANS NOW COMPARED TO BEFORE TRUMP?

Tell me my fellow Americans. Where are we now compared to before Trump? Trump came into office as president after 8 years of economic growth during the Obama presidency. President Obama took office during an economic crisis caused by an unnecessary tax cut for the wealthiest Americans during a time of two expensive wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Afghanistan was unavoidable after 9-11, but Iraq was a mistake. I believe George Bush was well intentioned,  but nonetheless the invasion of Iraq was an unnecessary and expensive mistake (in lives, dollars, and America's position in the world). In rescuing America from its economic disaster, Obama saved capitalism. The Trump gang at the Trump Party Convention has tried to paint Biden as a socialist, but that is blatently a typical Trump lie. They seem to neglect mentioning that Trump colluded with Putin's neo-KGB who helped get him elected president through influencing enough gullible Americans in swing states through social media to win Trump the Electoral College (although Hillary Clinton won the popular vote). During his time in office, Trump has falsely claimed the Obama economic growth as his own. He has continued the stock market growth by artificially lowering interest rates. But the stock market today has become detached from real economic growth and instead is propped up by low interest rates. Meanwhile the low interest rate for Trump's rich cronies has robbed America's Treasury creating the greatest deficit America has ever experienced. 

Many Republicans today have temporarily abandoned what was once the Republican Party but is now the shrunken Trump Party. Many of the commentators we see on MSNBC are those Republicans who can not stomach the dishonesty, hypocrisy, bigotry, and treason of Donald Trump and his extremist enablers. These refugees from Trumpism are the true Conservatives. The differences between American Liberals and American Conservatives are not as great as the differences between them and authoritarian Trumpers. In this upcoming election, we need to unite in supporting Joe Biden who truly will represent the majority of Americans. At some time in the future a real moderate conservative Republican Party will re-emerge, and we can duke out the details between us. That's how we will achieve real progress in America.

DESCENT FROM DEMOCRACY INTO AUTOCRACY

 The Cambridge Dictionary definition of autocracy is "government by a single person or small group that has unlimited power or authority, or the power or authority of such a person or group." Julius Caesar turned Rome from a republic into an imperial autocracy in ancient times via a civil war. But in more recent times democracy was often turned into autocracy not by war but by perverting the democratic system of elections. Adolf Hitler, the most notorious and cruel dictator of relatively recent times, became Chancellor of  the Weimar Republic in Germany by being elected and then over a period of a few years dismantling the republic making himself dictator. Vladimir Putin transferred a brief flirtation with democracy in Russia after the end of the Soviet Union into a dictatorship with a false face of democracy. Similarly we have seen other countries in Eastern Europe regress from temporary democracies back toward various degrees of autocracy, for example Hungary and Poland. In the past few days we have seen people in Belarus coming out and daring to demonstrate after the election in Belarus was obviously rigged to keep the leader in office. The main opposition leader in Russia was poisoned a few days ago and is now in a coma. Here in America where we have had a democratic republic for 250 years, we now have a president (Trump) who idolizes dictators like Putin, who lies continuosly, and who has fired competent people in high levels of government (including those who he himself appointed) because they spoke the truth, and he has replaced them with sycophant cronies who enable his grab for authoritarianism. Every time he flaunts the law and gets away with it, he becomes bolder in his attempt to corrupt American democracy. We are now approaching an opportunity to remove Trump from office through an American election. Trump and his gang are doing everything they can to suppress the votes of the American people. We, the American people, must not fail. This is an existential election for America.

THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION

Congratulations to Joe Biden for a great speech at the end of Democratic Convention. He articulated the goals of the Democratic Coalition clearly. Also congratulations to the Democratic party for presenting a great and innovative convention virtually in the midst of the COVID19 pandemic which eliminated the possibility of a traditional convention. Actually I think this kind of convention is an improvement over the traditional boisterous crowded balloon filled extravaganza. This virtual convention allowed greater participation by the ordinary people and concentrated more on substance than the traditional convention. Perhaps in the future after the scientists with the support of President Biden have taken us out of the COVID crisis, this or something like it should become the new tradition. It wouldn't be the preference of circus hucksters like Trump, but who cares?

TRUMP VERSUS THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE

 Trump in a desperate bid to rig the upcoming presidential election in his favor removed the Postmaster General and replaced him with one of his cronies, Louis DeJoy. DeJoy has acted to destroy the US postal service (including removing sorting machines and mail boxes) in the middle of the COVID19 pandemic. The Trump gang hopes this will decrease the number of Democratic mail in votes that will reach their destination in time to be counted, thus suppressing the vote in Trump's favor. Incidentally DeJoy has another conflict of interest in that he is heavily invested in UPS (United Parcel Service) which competes with the US Post Office. I will never use UPS again! Fortunately the US House of Representatives has been called back from recess to address the issue, and DeJoy is set to testify on Monday. The light that has been shown on DeJoy's schemes has caused him to say that he will pull back some of his sinister actions against the postal service.  But it remains to be seen if he will actually do it, and if he will correct the misdeeds he has already committed.

The Cambridge Dictionary definition of incompetence is "not having the ability to do something as it should be done." The most glaring example of Donald Trump's incompetence is his mishandling of the COVID19 crisis instead of springing to action when he was first informed of the pandemic starting in China the way President Obama acted with the EBOLA virus epidemic in West Africa. Obama assembled an international response early to stop it before it significantly affected America. In that way we showed the world the competence of America as well as preventing the virus from significantly reaching our country. Trump tried to sweep COVID under the rug because he thought knowledge of it would hurt him politically. He said it would miraculously disappear. Trump fears knowledge instead of embracing it. As a result of Trump's mishandling of the crisis more than 5 million Americans are known to have been infected with COVID 19 and 169 thousand have died from the disease. Compare that to 2 American nurses who contracted EBOLA during the Obama presidency and neither died. The Covid crisis also contributed to an economic crisis that has put millions of Americans out of work. There are many other examples of Trump's incompetence, but they are too numerous to present here.

The Cambridge Dictionary definition of corruption is illegal, bad, or dishonest behaviour, especially by people in positions of 

power. By that definition, Donald Trump is a corrupt president. He lies incessantly. He fires people under him who speak the truth and replaces them with sycophants who agree with him no matter what hes says or does. A few examples are AG Barr who uses his office to cover up Trump's illegal and dishonest actions and attack anyone who disagrees with Trump. Trump fired Dan Coats from his job as National Intelligence Director because Coats refused to deny the attack on our elections by Putin's neo-KGB to favor Trump and instead installed a sycophant to cover up for him. Trump fired the Postmaster General and replaced him with a corrupt sycophant (Louis DeJoy) who is now disrupting the US Postal Service to suppress voting because he knows the majority of Americans favor Joe Biden over Trump. Trump instructed his ambassador to Britain to pressure the British government to move a British golf tournament to Trump's Hotel in Scotland. These are just a few examples of how Trump has used his presidency to profit from his position of power. The list of Trump dishonest and bad actions goes on and on.

We the American people must not allow that to happen.

The Cambridge Dictionary definition of kleptocrat is "a leader who makes himself or herself rich and powerful by stealing from the rest of the people." That fits Donald Trump. He wouldn't put his investments into a blind trust. He temporarily put his sons in charge of the Trump company so he can keep his finger in it. He hides his income tax returns. He tried to pressure the British government into holding some golf tournament at his Scotland golf resort. He admires and sucks up to Vladimir Putin, the kleptocratic leader of Russia. He causes foreign representatives to stay at his hotel in Washington, DC which is located in the old post office and which makes him the tenant and landlord of the hotel creating a conflict of interest.

VOTE FOR JOE BIDEN. MAKE THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT SERVE THE INTERESTS OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, NOT THE PERSONAL INTERESTS OF THE PRESIDENT.

Here is a definition of narcissistic personality disorder I found online at the Mayo Clinic Website. It appears to fit Donald Trump.
